The Problem
Out-of-school hours are increasingly on screens. Anxiety and isolation are up. Teen quality of life is down. Many adults try to help, but conventional wisdom isn’t changing behavior.
Problem → Opportunity
CTF’s opportunity
We scrutinize Conventional Wisdom and do 2 things: Suggest new empirical experiments (nerdy), and get in there ourselves to test ideas with real teens (humbly disclosing what worked and what failed).
Measurement
CTF Key Metric: Hours Per Week in a Flourishing State
R&D Lab
The Puzzle: Converting teen languishing hours into flourishing hours.
Less: Endless TikTok or Discord.
Less: Fake-Homeworking, when Teen imprisons self in bedroom, accomplishing nothing.
More: Exercise, pleasure reading, part-time jobs, 8 hour sleep nights, in-person laughing with friends.
CTF Big Picture
Who We Serve
-
Languishing Teens.
-
Not Flourishing Teens, Not Acute Teens
-
Paths to Help
-
1-1, individual Teens.
-
Not Fix High Schools - we cheer on our friends engaged in that work, and sometimes advise them. But CTF focus is helping individuals, not changing institutions.
-
How We Measure
-
Weekly Hours in a Flourishing State
-
GPA, Test Scores, Mental Health Screens All Important - but Languishing Teens are often okay on these metrics. We need data on sleep, exercise, in-person time with friends, actually doing homework, volunteering....all the things that count as "Hours In A Flourishing State" to help a Languishing Teen become a Flourishing Teen.
